You’ve unboxed your Chromecast, plugged it in, and are ready to dive into an ad-free YouTube experience with SmartTube. But instead of the familiar app-filled home screen, you’re staring at a static photo or a personal picture slideshow. The Google TV interface is nowhere to be found, and the option to install new apps seems completely locked away.
This frustrating wall of photos means your Chromecast is stuck in a limited mode, often called “Ambient Mode” or “Backdrop.” It’s designed to be a digital photo frame when idle, not a full-fledged streaming device interface. The standard installation path for SmartTube—searching the Google Play Store—is invisible to you.

Before we fix it, let’s understand the “why.” This behavior isn’t a glitch; it’s a specific device mode. Newer Chromecast with Google TV devices and many Android TV devices have a setup flow that can sometimes default to or get stuck in a basic display mode.
This mode prioritizes simplicity, turning your TV into a backdrop for Google Photos or curated imagery. It disables the full launcher, which is the app menu you need to access the Play Store. The device is essentially functioning as a Chromecast Ultra (for casting only) rather than a Chromecast with Google TV (with its own OS and apps).
The goal of our process is to force the device to complete its full setup and download the standard Google TV launcher, revealing the app ecosystem.

Finally, you’ll need the remote that came with your Chromecast with Google TV. Navigation without it is nearly impossible.
Step-by-Step: Enabling Apps and Installing SmartTube
Follow these steps in order. The first part activates the hidden app launcher, and the second part gets SmartTube onto your device.
Exiting Backdrop Mode and Enabling Unknown Sources
Grab your Chromecast remote. Press the circular navigation button to wake the device from the photo display. You might see a small settings gear icon or a “Settings” label at the top or bottom of the screen. Navigate to it and press select.
Inside Settings, look for an option called “System,” “Device,” or “About.” Scroll down until you find “Android TV OS build” or a similar “Build number” entry. Click on this entry rapidly seven times. You should see a toast message saying “You are now a developer!”
Go back to the main Settings menu. A new option called “Developer options” should now appear. Open it and find the setting labeled “Unknown sources” or “Install unknown apps.” You need to enable this for the “Downloader” app we will use. Say “Open Chrome” clearly. If Chrome isn’t installed, try saying “Open browser.” If a browser opens, go to the next step. If voice commands fail, you may need to use a computer. On your computer, open a browser and go to the Google Play Store website. Search for “Downloader by AFTVnews” and find its install page. You should see your Chromecast listed as an available device. Click “Install” to remotely push the Downloader app to your Chromecast.
Once installed, you should see the Downloader app icon appear on your screen. If not, try rebooting the Chromecast from the Settings > System menu.
Downloading and Installing SmartTube Next
Open the Downloader app. The first time, it may ask for permission to access files. Grant it. You’ll see a URL field. Using the remote, enter the following official SmartTube download URL: https://smarttubenext.github.io (Note: Always get the APK from the official GitHub source to ensure safety).
Navigate to and select the “Download” section or the “Stable” release link. Choose the latest APK file for Android TV/ARM64. The Downloader app will fetch the file. After download, it will prompt you to install it. Click “Install.”
The installation may take a minute. Once complete, do NOT press “Open” yet. Instead, press “Done.” Then, use the back button on your remote to return to the Downloader app’s home screen. This is crucial to delete the APK file and free up space. In Downloader, go to “Settings” and find “Delete APK after installation” and enable it. You can also manually browse to the “Downloads” folder and delete the .apk file.
Accessing SmartTube and Setting It Up
Now, press the home button on your remote. If you completed the full setup correctly, you should now see the Google TV launcher with rows of apps and recommendations. Your installed apps, including SmartTube, should be in the “Apps” row at the top.
If the launcher still doesn’t appear, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find “Android TV Home” or “Google TV Home,” force stop it, and then clear its cache. Return home, and the launcher should load.
Open SmartTube. The app will guide you through initial setup, including granting necessary permissions for accessibility features (which allow it to block ads).
