You’ve fought off mites and soldier ants, but now you’re hearing rumors of a new area. A place filled with treasure, danger, and some of the most valuable resources in the game: the Sandbox.
In Obsidian Entertainment’s survival game Grounded, the Sandbox is a mid-to-late game zone that holds critical crafting materials like salt, spicy candy chunks, and antlion parts. It’s also the gateway to even more dangerous and rewarding areas. But getting there isn’t as simple as just walking across the yard. The journey is blocked by a towering sand castle wall, and the environment itself is a deadly hazard.

Understanding the Sandbox and Its Dangers
Before you attempt the journey, it’s crucial to know what you’re walking into. The Sandbox is located in the upper yard, a higher-elevation area separated from the lower yard by a steep, rocky border. It’s a vast, open area of fine sand, dotted with toys, a sandcastle, and a lurking major predator.
The primary environmental threat is sizzle. Just like in the real world, sand gets extremely hot under the sun. In Grounded, this is represented by a sizzle meter that fills up when you’re on the sand during the day. When the meter fills completely, you’ll start taking constant damage. This makes daytime exploration without preparation a death sentence.
The other key threat is the Antlion. These large, burrowing insects patrol the Sandbox and are formidable enemies. They are fast, hit hard, and can summon sand attacks. You will need a strategy to deal with them, whether through combat or avoidance.

First, navigate to the upper yard. From the Oak Tree, head towards the picnic table. To the left of the table (if you’re facing it from the tree), you’ll find a route up a rock path and past a charcoal bag. This leads into the upper yard. Follow the edge of the yard until you see the vast, open sand area and the distinctive tan wall blocking your path.
The wall is too high to jump. This is where your building materials come in. You need to construct a staircase or a series of clover roof ramps to scale it.
1. Scout for a good starting point along the wall where the ground is relatively level on your side.
2. Open your building menu (B key by default) and select the “Stairs” blueprint or the “Clover Roof” piece. Clover roofs make excellent ramps.
3. Place your first piece against the wall. You may need to stack several stair pieces or place multiple ramps in a zigzag pattern to create a climbable path to the top.
4. Build your way up. It typically takes 4-5 pieces to reach the top of the wall.
5. Once at the top, you can walk along the wall. Look for a spot inside the Sandbox where the sand is close to the wall top, and simply jump down.
Congratulations, you are now in the Sandbox. Immediately be on alert for Antlions and watch your sizzle meter.
The Stealthy Alternative: The Rake Tunnel
There is a secondary, less obvious entrance that doesn’t require building. On the side of the Sandbox closest to the porch of the house, there is a large garden rake lying on its side. The handle of this rake creates a tunnel that goes under the sand castle wall.
To find it, navigate to the upper yard area near the porch steps. Look for the giant wooden rake head. Crawl under the handle where it meets the ground. You will find yourself in a narrow, dark tunnel that leads directly into the Sandbox. This is a great stealth entrance, but be cautious, as it can sometimes have spider webs or other hazards inside.
Surviving the Sizzle and Your First Antlion
You’re in. Now the real challenge begins. If you entered during the day, your sizzle meter will immediately start filling. Here is your survival protocol.
– Stick to the Shadows: The edges of the Sandbox, near toys or the castle, often provide shade. Running from one patch of shadow to another is a key strategy.
– Use the Oasis: In the center of the Sandbox is a small, green oasis with a leaf and a juice box. Standing in the water or the shade here completely stops sizzle buildup. Use it as a safe haven to cool off.
– Nighttime is the Right Time: The simplest strategy is to enter the Sandbox at night. The sizzle mechanic is completely disabled, allowing you to explore freely. Sleep in a bed until dusk before starting your journey.
For your first Antlion, do not engage in an open sand duel. Lure it towards the edge of the Sandbox, near the grass or a rock. Their movement can be slower on uneven terrain. Use your strongest weapon, block its charges, and attack during its recovery animations. 4. Explore the Sand Castle: The castle itself has a lab outpost inside with valuable raw science and a BURG.L chip.
5. Locate the Trash Heap: The Sandbox exit on the far side leads to another late-game area, the Trash Heap, home to the powerful Black Ox Beetle.
Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting
– Not Bringing a Hammer: You cannot mine salt or candy without it. It’s a heartbreaking trip back to base if you forget.
– Engaging Multiple Antlions: Always fight them one at a time. Their combined sand attacks are devastating.
– Ignoring Thirst: Sizzle accelerates thirst drain. Dying of thirst while fighting an Antlion is a common rookie error.
– Building Your Ramp in an Antlion Patrol Path: Scout the area first. If you build your entrance in a high-traffic zone, you’ll be attacked every time you use it.
