You Just Had a Great Experience and Want to Share It
You found a new coffee shop with the perfect latte, your mechanic fixed your car faster than promised, or a local bookstore helped you find a rare gem. Your first thought? “I should leave them a good review on Google.”
But then you open your phone, search for the business, and get stuck. The review button seems to hide. You’re not sure what to write, or maybe you’re worried about your privacy. You close the app, and that helpful feedback never gets posted.
This happens every day. Positive reviews are crucial for small businesses, and your authentic experience can guide countless other customers. The process, however, isn’t always intuitive. Whether you’re on a phone, tablet, or computer, submitting a review is a straightforward process once you know the steps.
This guide will walk you through exactly how to find a business, write a meaningful review, and post it publicly on Google Search and Maps. We’ll also cover how to edit or delete a review later, answer common questions, and explain why your contribution matters so much.
Understanding Google Reviews and Your Google Account
Before you start typing, it helps to know where your review will live. When you submit a review on Google, it becomes part of that business’s public profile on Google Search and Google Maps.
Your review is tied to your personal Google Account. This means your first name, last initial, and profile picture (if you have one set) will appear next to your review. You cannot post a review anonymously.
The business owner can respond to your review publicly, creating a dialogue. Your review also influences the business’s overall star rating, which is an average of all its reviews. A single thoughtful review can significantly impact a small local business.
What You’ll Need to Get Started
To leave a review, you need just a few things. First, an active Google Account. This is the same account you use for Gmail, YouTube, or an Android phone. You must be signed into this account on the device you’re using.
Second, you need a device with internet access. The steps are nearly identical whether you’re using the Google Maps app on your smartphone, the Google Search website on a computer, or the Maps website in a browser.
Finally, you need the name and approximate location of the business you want to review. You don’t need the exact address; Google’s search is powerful enough to find “Joe’s Diner downtown” if you’re in the right city.
How to Submit a Review Using Your Smartphone
For most people, leaving a review is easiest directly from a phone. The Google Maps app is pre-installed on Android devices and available for free download on iPhones. Follow these steps.
Open the Google Maps app on your iPhone or Android device. Ensure you are signed in. You can check by tapping your profile picture icon in the top right corner of the app’s search screen.
In the search bar at the top, type the name of the business you want to review. As you type, suggestions will appear. Tap on the correct business listing from the results.
The business’s profile page will open. Here you’ll see its address, hours, photos, and its overall star rating. Scroll down slightly until you see the section labeled “Reviews.” Just below the star rating, you will see a row of five gray stars and the text “Tap to rate.”
Tap on the stars to choose your rating. One star is poor, five stars is excellent. As you tap, the stars will turn yellow. After selecting your star rating, a text box labeled “Share details of your own experience at this place” will appear.
Tap inside this text box and write your review. Be specific. Instead of just “Great service,” try “The staff was incredibly friendly when I came in with a flat tire. They helped me call a tow truck and offered me coffee while I waited.”
When you’re finished, tap the white “Post” button in the top right corner of the screen. Your review will upload and soon appear on the business’s profile.
Adding Photos to Your Review
A picture is worth a thousand five-star ratings. When you are writing your review in the Google Maps app, look for a camera icon below the text box. Tapping this lets you take a new photo with your camera or select an existing photo from your phone’s library.
You can add up to ten photos or a short video. Photos of food, a clean storefront, a completed repair job, or a unique product are incredibly valuable to other customers and the business owner.
After selecting your photos, they will upload when you tap “Post.” Your review will then display with a photo thumbnail, making it more prominent and trustworthy.
How to Submit a Review on a Desktop Computer
If you prefer a full-sized keyboard, submitting a review from a web browser is just as simple. The process is almost the same whether you use Google Search or Google Maps in your browser.
Open your web browser (like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox) and go to google.com. Make sure you are signed into your Google Account. You can check by looking at the top-right corner of the Google homepage for your profile picture or initial.
In the Google search bar, type the business name and location. For example, “The Book Nook Seattle.” Press Enter. In the search results, you should see a business knowledge panel on the right side of the screen. This box contains the business info, map, and star rating.
Within this knowledge panel, click on the Google Maps link that says “View on Google Maps” or directly on the star rating that shows a number like “4.2 (127 reviews).” This will open the business’s full profile on Google Maps in your browser.
On the business’s Maps profile page, look on the left-hand side. You will see a section for “Reviews.” Below the overall rating, click on the five gray stars or the text that says “Write a review.”
A pop-up window will appear. Click the stars to choose your rating. A large text box will open for your written review. Type your detailed experience here.
To add photos, click the camera icon within this pop-up window. You can drag and drop images from your computer or select files to upload. When your review is ready, click the blue “Post” button at the bottom of the pop-up.
Crafting a Helpful and Effective Review
Anyone can give five stars. A truly helpful review provides context that aids future customers. Think about what you wanted to know before you visited.
Describe what you purchased or the service you received. Mention specific employee names if they provided exceptional service (with their permission, if possible). Note the atmosphere, cleanliness, wait times, and value for money.
Keep it honest and factual. If there was a minor issue but it was resolved well, mention that too. It adds credibility. Avoid emotional rants or overly vague praise. Your goal is to be a helpful guide.
Remember that your review is a permanent public statement. Do not include personal contact information, confidential details about the business, or profanity. Google may remove reviews that violate its content policies.
What to Do If You Have a Negative Experience
If you had a genuinely poor experience, it is acceptable to leave a critical review. However, the goal should be constructive feedback, not vengeance.
First, consider if the issue could be resolved directly with the business. A private message to the owner might fix the problem. If you choose to leave a public critical review, state the facts clearly and calmly.
Describe what happened, what you expected, and how the business responded. This is far more useful than “This place sucks.” A business owner can’t fix a problem they don’t understand. A factual critical review can sometimes prompt a public apology and a change in policy, which benefits everyone.
Managing Your Reviews After You Post Them
Changed your mind? Found a typo? Google lets you manage your reviews easily. You can edit the text, change your star rating, add or remove photos, or delete the review entirely.
To edit or delete a review on your phone, open the Google Maps app. Tap your profile picture in the top right, then select “Your profile.” You will see a “Reviews” tab. Tap it to see all reviews you’ve ever posted.
Find the review you want to change and tap the three vertical dots (the “More” menu) next to it. A menu will pop up with options to “Edit review” or “Delete review.” Select your choice and follow the prompts.
On a desktop computer, go to your Google Maps contribution page. You can get there by searching “my contributions google maps” in Google. On the contributions page, find the review and use the three-dot menu to edit or delete it.
When you edit a review, the edited timestamp will update. The business owner is not notified when you edit or delete a review.
Why Can’t I Find the Review Button?
Sometimes, the option to leave a review seems to disappear. Here are the most common reasons and fixes.
You are not signed into a Google Account. The review feature is only available to signed-in users. Check your profile icon in the app or browser.
The business is permanently closed. Google disables new reviews for closed establishments.
You have a conflict of interest. Google may block reviews if it detects you are the business owner, an employee, or have a strong competitive connection. You cannot review your own business.
Google has temporarily disabled reviews for that place. This can happen if the listing is under investigation for review policy violations or during unusual activity.
You have already reviewed that business. In this case, the button will say “Edit review” or “View your review.”
If you’re sure none of these apply and the button is still missing, try closing and reopening the app, updating the app, or using a different device.
Your Review Makes the Local Web More Useful
When you take a few minutes to share a genuine experience, you do more than just help a business. You contribute to a collective knowledge base that helps neighbors find reliable services, encourages good business practices, and builds community trust.
Your review might be the deciding factor for a family choosing a pediatrician, a couple booking a wedding venue, or someone finding a trustworthy plumber in an emergency. The digital word-of-mouth you create has real-world impact.
The process is simple: search for the place, tap the stars, write a few honest sentences, and hit post. Whether from your couch or on the go, you can make a difference in minutes.
So the next time you have a noteworthy experience—good or bad—open Google Maps. Your insights are valuable. Share them, and help shape the landscape of local business for everyone.
