You Downloaded Widgetable, Now What?
You saw those cute, interactive widgets on a friend’s Lock Screen. A little pet that grows, a shared countdown with your partner, or a collaborative to-do list that updates in real time. You searched, found Widgetable, and hit install. Now the app is on your home screen, and you’re staring at a friendly interface, wondering how to actually make it work.
This moment is common. Widgetable packs a powerful concept—shared, living widgets—into a simple app. The gap between downloading and actually using it with someone can feel confusing. This guide will walk you through every step, from your first widget to managing a whole collection with friends and family.
Understanding the Widgetable Mindset
Widgetable isn’t just another widget app. Think of it as a social network for your iPhone’s Lock Screen and Home Screen. Instead of static weather or calendar info, you create widgets that other people can join. These widgets become shared spaces for fun, connection, or simple coordination.
The core loop is simple: you create a widget, share an invite link, and once accepted, the widget appears on both of your phones. Any interaction, like feeding a virtual pet or checking off a task, syncs instantly. This transforms your phone from a purely personal device into a subtle, always-present connection point.
What You Can Actually Share
Before you start tapping, know your options. Widgetable offers several widget types, each with a different social purpose.
– Pet Widgets: These are the most popular. You adopt a virtual pet (like a puppy, kitten, or panda) that lives on your Lock Screen. Both you and your partner feed, play with, and care for it. The pet grows and evolves based on your joint attention.
– Countdown Widgets: Perfect for events. Share a countdown to a vacation, anniversary, or project deadline. Both parties see the same ticking clock.
– Todo List Widgets: A simple, shared checklist. Great for grocery lists, packing lists, or household tasks. Checking an item off removes it for everyone.
– Step Contest Widgets: A friendly fitness competition. Link your Apple Health data and see who walks more steps each day in a simple widget.
– Text Widgets: A shared note or message board. Leave little love notes, inside jokes, or reminders for each other.
Your First Widget: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Let’s create and share a widget together. We’ll use a shared pet, as it’s the most engaging example.
Step 1: Creating the Widget Inside the App
Open the Widgetable app. You’ll see a plus (+) button or a “Create Widget” option. Tap it.
You’ll be presented with the gallery of widget types. Scroll and select “Pet.” Now, choose your pet. Do you want a playful Shiba Inu, a sleepy cat, or a curious penguin? Tap your choice.
You’ve now created the widget. It will appear in the “My Widgets” section of the app. Here, it’s just a prototype. To make it live and shareable, you need to place it on your screen.
Step 2: Placing the Widget on Your Home or Lock Screen
Exit the Widgetable app. On your Home Screen, enter “jiggle mode” by long-pressing an empty area until the icons shake. Tap the plus (+) button in the top-left corner.
In the widget gallery that appears, scroll down or use the search bar to find “Widgetable.” You’ll see all the available widget sizes (small, medium, large) for the type you created. Select the size you want.
Tap “Add Widget.” It will plop onto your Home Screen. It will likely show a default state or a “No pet selected” message. Tap and hold this new widget, then select “Edit Widget.”
A configuration menu appears. The key field is “Widget.” Tap it, and you’ll see a list of all the widgets you’ve created in the app. Select the pet you just made (e.g., “Shiba Inu”). The widget on your screen will now transform, showing your new pet.
Step 3: The Magic Step – Sharing It
This is the core of Widgetable. Go back into the Widgetable app. Find your pet in the “My Widgets” list. Tap on it to open its management page.
Look for a button labeled “Share” or “Invite.” Tapping this will generate a unique invite link. You have several sharing options: “Copy Link,” “Message,” “WhatsApp,” “Instagram,” etc. Choose the messaging app you use with the person you want to share with.
Send the link. The recipient does not need to have the app installed yet. When they tap the link, it will guide them to download Widgetable (if needed) and then immediately accept the invitation. Once they accept, the exact same pet widget will appear in their app and can be added to their own Lock Screen.
Living With Your Shared Widget
Now that the widget is active and shared, how do you interact with it? The experience differs slightly between the widget view and the app.
Interacting Directly on the Lock Screen
On your Lock Screen, the widget is primarily for viewing. You can see your pet’s current mood, the countdown timer, or the todo list. For pets, you can usually perform one simple action directly—like a quick tap to pet it, which might give a small happiness boost.
For more substantial interactions, like feeding or playing a game, you need to enter the Widgetable app. A long press on the Lock Screen widget will often give you a shortcut to open the app directly to that specific pet’s page.
Managing and Playing in the App
Open the Widgetable app and go to the widget. Here, you have the full dashboard. For a pet, you’ll see its status (Hunger, Happiness, Cleanliness), an inventory of food and toys, and buttons for actions like “Feed,” “Play,” or “Clean.”
When you feed the pet, its hunger meter depletes. Your friend, on their phone, will see the updated meter in real-time. They can then play with it to boost happiness. This shared responsibility is the charm. The pet’s growth stages are unlocked by consistent, shared care over time.
Solving Common Widgetable Problems
Even the smoothest apps have hiccups. Here are the typical issues and how to fix them.
The Widget Shows “No Data” or “Select a Widget”
This almost always means the widget on your screen isn’t linked to an active widget in the app. Tap and hold the problem widget, select “Edit Widget,” and ensure the “Widget” field is set to your specific pet or countdown, not left on the default.
If your widget disappears after a phone restart, it’s the same fix. Re-edit the widget and re-select it from the list.
The Invite Link Isn’t Working for My Friend
First, ensure your friend is tapping the link on their iPhone. Widgetable is an iOS-only app. Android users cannot join.
Second, links can expire. If it’s been several days, generate a fresh invite link from the app and send it again. Have your friend ensure they allow the link to open in the Widgetable app when prompted.
My Pet Isn’t Growing or Evolving
Growth is tied to consistent interaction over days, not just a single play session. Check the pet’s status page in the app. There is usually a progress bar or hint toward the next evolution. Make sure both you and your partner are interacting daily. It’s a slow, rewarding burn.
If you’re sure it’s stuck, try the classic tech fix: close the Widgetable app completely (swipe it away from the app switcher) and reopen it. This forces a fresh sync with the server.
I Want to Remove Someone or Delete a Widget
To remove a participant, open the widget in the Widgetable app. Look for a “Members” or “Settings” section. You should see an option to remove a user. Be aware this will delete the widget from their device entirely.
To delete a widget completely, go to the “My Widgets” list in the app. Swipe left on the widget and tap “Delete.” You should also remove the widget from your Home Screen by entering jiggle mode and tapping the minus (-) sign.
Taking Widgetable to the Next Level
Once you’ve mastered one shared pet, consider how these tools can fit into your daily life.
Use a Countdown widget with your family to build excitement for an upcoming trip. A shared Todo List widget with a roommate simplifies chore tracking. A Text widget with a long-distance friend becomes a permanent, glanceable message board for your inside jokes.
The power is in choosing the right widget for the right relationship. It’s a low-effort, high-presence way to stay connected without needing to constantly text or call. Your shared context lives right on the device you both check a hundred times a day.
Making Shared Moments Part of Your Routine
Widgetable succeeds when it becomes a background habit. That quick tap to feed the pet when you check the time, the glance at a shrinking countdown during a busy day—these micro-interactions create a sense of shared space.
Start simple. Master one widget with one person. Understand the flow from creation to sharing to daily interaction. From there, you’ll naturally see where else in your life a little, living widget might add a smile or streamline coordination. Your phone’s screen is no longer just yours; it’s a tiny, shared window with the people who matter most.
